Audio Formats

The next step to consider is which audio format is best for your home cinema setup.

Dolby Digital
1. Dolby Pro Logic/Pro Logic II

Dolby Pro Logic is the original home cinema audio format; it decodes a surround sound signal from two channels and has now been upgraded to Pro Logic II.

2. Dolby Digital 5.1

Dolby Digital 5.1 is now the standard audio format for the majority of DVD systems.

DTS
1. DTS 5.1

Similar to Dolby Digital 5.1, featuring 5 separate Audio channels and 1 separate Sub.

2. DTS-ES

This is actually a 5.1 channel system but mimics a 6.1 channel system by combining the rear left and right audio channels.

THX
1. THX Select

The THX comes in two variations, THX Select and THX Ultra. Both use a post processing system, which allows the THX to emulate movie audio.
